Evolve or Die
I was shocked when Dotfash Meredith, the media group that purchased InStyle, announced it would be terminating the print issues of the Mag in April and going all digital.
Why????? I am a huge fan of print. Ever since I was a kid, I would read anything I could get my hands on…tabloids, literature, comic books, magazines; you name it. InStyle was the fashion bible. Nothing against Vogue, but InStyle featured stuff I could actually buy and not just the aspirational couture and labels that Vogue worshipped.
So, I thought I’d mosey on down to the bookstore to pick up what would be one of the last two issues.
It got me thinking that I guess we all must evolve. We have to change when the tides turn or when things no longer serve us.
Look at Blockbuster video . They wouldn’t evolve and Netflix swooped in and destroyed them. The Post Office can hardly sell a stamp because online banking and bill pay saw the future. And HBO Max has embraced a new way of releasing blockbuster films. If Movie theaters don’t pivot they too may be obsolete.
So when I say “change,” I mean the way we do things, not the core of who we are. Dotfash said they did not buy a magazine; they purchased a brand. And the brand will remain. So if you have to shift gears, it is not a failure; hopefully, it is because you are paying attention to where the tides are turning.
And as long as your ”brand” and the good stuff that makes you You, remain, I believe you will be okay.
